Professional Drummer, Educator, and Workshop Leader.

About Me
Hi, I'm John Randall – a professional drummer and dedicated music educator based in Stowmarket, Suffolk.
I currently teach at Barnardiston Hall School, Old Buckenham Hall School, and Broadlands Hall School. As well as my mainstream teaching roles, I also have extensive experience working with children, young people, and adults with additional needs. I regularly lead inclusive music workshops designed to engage those with special educational needs, struggling youths, and individuals from challenging backgrounds.
I'm also well-versed in electronic drums and percussion technology, including the Roland SPD-30 and SPD-SX, and sampling software integration.
Education & Training
I was fortunate to study for five years under the legendary Bob Armstrong, one of the UK’s most respected drum educators, until his passing in 2017. During that time, I focused on jazz and stick technique through his renowned masterclasses.
Since then, I’ve continued my development under Pete Riley, a highly regarded drummer known for his work with Rhythm Magazine and performances alongside Guthrie Govan, Republica, and many others.
Performance Experience
With over 25 years of live performance experience, I've played across the UK and Europe with original bands, appearing at major festivals such as V Festival (2007) with Roslaita and Latitude (2011) with The B Goodes. I’ve supported top acts including:
-
The Babyshambles
-
The Foo Fighters
-
The Jam
-
The Damned
-
Sparks
-
Chas & Dave
-
Towers of London
-
Jack Peñate
Neil Innes
Studio highlights include recording sessions at BBC Maida Vale Studios, and performing in multiple BBC Radio sessions—one of which included working with Milton McDonald, session guitarist for Take That and other major artists.
Corporate & Event Work
For over 20 years, I’ve also been a regular fixture in the corporate and function circuit, performing at high-profile events across the UK and Europe with bands such as The Talent and The Gifted.
Approach
Studio Sessions & Touring
I'm a passionate, charismatic, and highly professional drummer with a deep love for both live performance and studio work. I always play to serve the song, bringing energy, precision, and creativity to every project.
With years of experience tuning, writing, and performing in professional bands, I bring a refined sound, an extensive collection of high-quality gear, and a collaborative mindset to every session. I’m easy to work with, happy to contribute ideas, and always focused on achieving the best possible result.
My timing is impeccable—especially when playing to a click—and I’m fully comfortable working with Roland electronic drum sampling gear including the SPD-SX and SPD-30.
Teaching
I currently teach at two of Suffolk’s most prestigious schools, as well as offering private lessons. I teach all styles of drumming across all skill levels, and specialize in the Trinity Rock & Pop Syllabus, from Initial to Grade 8. I also offer masterclasses focused on specific techniques or performance skills.
My teaching approach is engaging, supportive, and tailored to each student’s goals. I use a wide range of teaching materials and methods to ensure lessons are fun, inspiring, and effective—whether you're a complete beginner or a professional looking to sharpen your technique, control, and sound.
